Glasgow Gaels 1.10 V 0.06 Dunedin Connolly’s

Deliver!

The Glasgow Gaels set down a marker last night for the season with a big performance against Dunedin Connolly’s, Edinburgh. Our lads worked their socks off in a game we led from start to finish.

The lads were making amends for a defeat in the league a week ago in Edinburgh.  From the sidelines of Thornly Park the Glasgow Gaels play, intensity and finishing reminded me of the great Leitrim team of, well last weekend. ;)

From here our work begins (you can be sure Edinburgh will come back stronger), we need to take that intensity into training every session. We’ll need to raise our game again if we’re finally to back the Scottish Championship to Glasgow.

Keep it up lads, those who missed out will have to work hard to get a game in this team.

A Good Nights Craic

DSC_0462

This time last week there were lads and ladies coming out of beauty salons all over Glasgow in preparation for the biggest night of the year for Glasgow’s socialites.   Hair was coiffed, tan was complete, hip flasks were filled and the fun was just about to begin.

The dinner dance was a great success for the club thanks to the help of a few people who’s efforts must be acknowledged.  The Gaels would like to extend a huge debt of gratitude to Elaine, Lorraine, Diane & Nikki for organising a great night on Saturday, the night went so smoothly and everyone seemed to have a great time.  Everything down to the small details such as the sweets on the tables went down a storm.

Only the Glasgow Gaels manage to blag an impromptu appearance from, a bag-piper, Celtic Legend Tom Boyd and the European Cup

League Campaign, New Jerseys off to flying Start

Last Thursday, 5th May, the Glasgow Gaels got our Scottish League campaign off to a great start with an invaluable 1-15 to 0-03 victory over Tir Conaill at Lochinch Police Playing Fields, Pollok Park.

It was the first outing for the club’s new kit (pictures to follow) and the second half performance in particular saw the lads do it full justice.

The Gaels edged a cagey 1st half, as Cathal Heron expertly dispatched a penalty to leave breathing space between the sides at half time.

Highlight of the match was a rampaging 2nd half run from the full back line by Davie McLeod topped off with a belter off a point from beyond the 40. Davie was immediately substituted so he could receive his standing ovation.

A busy schedule lies in store next week with Dunedin Connolly’s (Edinburgh) away and Sands McSwineys (Coatbridge) at home next Tuesday and Thursday respectively and then the annual knees up at the Dinner Dance on the 14th in the Thistle Hotel, Cambridge Street, Glasgow.

Get in touch if you want to play gaelic football or get involved with Scotland’s premier GAA club!

Why join the Glasgow Gaels?

Recently we had a visit to a couple of our trainings of a young UWS journalism student, Kieran Foley to video some action and interview a few of the Glasgow Gaels.  Kieran was completing a project on what is Gaelic Football and why should anyone join a GAA club outside Ireland.  Check out some of his work below in the video.

I think we can agree a more professional effort than our last video, however if you check out this slideshow questions will have to be asked of Kieran’s musical tastes!

Unfortunately Kieran’s artistic integrity will not be compromised and no matter what I tried he wouldn’t remove the incriminating 2nd from last picture.  Honestly Damo that is not Frankie still jumping whilst I relaxed.

We have a busy league schedule in May, starting with a match tonight vs Tir Conaill, two matches next week (10th and 12th vs Edinburgh and Coatbridge) and matches on the next two Tuesdays thereafter (17th and 24th) – not to mention our Dinner Dance on the 14th! – so this is an ideal time to get in touch with the club and get involved.

Davitt Shield Winners 2011

Something similar to the Davitt Shield

Davitt Shield Final Result:
Glasgow Gaels 1:16 vs 0:3 Tir Conaill Harps
Venue: Lochinch Police Grounds, Pollok Park

The Gaels celebrated* our 1st silverware** of the year with a fine victory in the Davitt Shield final last night.

Let’s keep the momentum going with a few drinks in O’Neill’s Bar in the Merchant City tomorrow night. Gary’s buying ;) See you in there from 8!

Disclaimers:
*Celebrating winning the Davitt Shield in Scottish GAA is traditionally signified by walking off the field in a dignified manner as if nothing significant actually occurred. We stuck with tradition.
**Apparently no trophy has to be present to count as winning the Davitt Shield, it’s more of a metaphorical trophy. As memory serves the Davitt Shield despite being called a shield is actually almost identical to the Sam Maguire as pictured.

18th April 2011

We had a good start to the Glasgow Gaels Gaelic Football season with a 1:19 to 0:4 victory over a Sands McSwiney’s side which was bolstered by a few familiar faces including oul’ hands Owen Walls (right) and super-sub Brendan Henry (Thankfully Thornly Park’s printer was out of ink or the transfer papers would have been signed!).  If it wasn’t for the heroics of their stand in Goalie it could have been a lot more.

The Gaels also celebrated another of our oul’ hands, Conor Murphy’s (left) 40th Birthday on Saturday night in a surprise party.  Conor showed he still has a young man’s eyesight though immediately spotting his mammy through the crowd.  A hotline has been set up for anyone suffering from food poisoning as a result of the Glenullin Jersey Birthday cake.

The week ahead:

Mens football training tonight 19.15 at Nethercraigs.

We also have a tough away game on 19:00 Wednesday night against local rivals Tir Chonaill Harps at Lochinch Police Ground, Pollock Park

Let’s keep the good start to the season going!

The Gaels are now on playGAA

Check out our page on playGAA, we’re the first club in Scotland to be involved in a new website aimed at promoting the  Gaelic Football clubs across the UK.

Hopefully this will help raise our profile amongst new exiles trying to find a club when they make the move over from Ireland. We need all the help we can get, we have good numbers at training  but injuries and work commitments will take their toll later in the season so lets get some more numbers out.

We’re also in line to be one of the featured clubs so look out for that too.
